What's your favorite "first day of school" experience?

Comments

My favorite "first day" experience was my very first day as a teacher. I remember that excited feeling to be doing that which I loved. My dad took my picture standing by my car holding a bulletin board character I had made. It was one of the best days of my life.

by Linda P.

I love the first day EVERY year!  I always read the book, "It Happens to Everyone".  It helps the kids feel comfy to know that I am nervous each year on the first day, too!  I also always tell my kids that by the end of the day, I will know ALL of their names!  If I get them all correct, I give them a "first day treat"!

My favorite first day experience was actually my third year as a teacher  for several reasons.  By my third year, I felt comfortable with what to expect and had developed my own way to set the tone for my classroom.  However, years later I still get the nervous butterflies as well.  My third year was also a great first day because we had finally got our own school and I had a brand new classroom that I didn't have to share with any other teachers.  I used every inch of space towards developing inquiring minds and creating portals into ancient historical periods.  That "first day" was the beginning of our "time traveling journey" that set a great tone for 179 more!

When students ask me, "When did you decide to become a teacher?" I tell them I don't know - as long as I can remember I have always wanted to teach - there really wasn't a defining moment when I decided on this career.  I am very proud to be in this profession and enjoy each day filled with new challenges and rewards.  So, maybe teaching isn't something you decide to do - it is something you are born to do!

After 14 years, the first day of school is still my favorite day of the year! I get so excited (YES, I am a teacher nerd) to finally meet the students and families I will get to work with during the year. Each year something funny always happens, but one year stands out. We were doing a graph to find out what color everybody's eyes were while sitting in group. Well  one boy was sitting there pulling down his bottom eye lid. I asked what he was doing and he said he was trying to find out what color his eyes were...... I just about fell over-that was so funny and cute! Bless his little heart, I guess no one had ever told him he had brown eyes. That day I just knew I was going to have a wonderful year and I truly did!

Honestly, the second day of school is the best!  The first day of nerves and trying to remember names to faces is over.  The children have survived the first day blues of will my locker open, can I find my class and will the teacher have a smile?  We start with a Skittle activity with matching the letters of your name to the colors and then enjoy the sweet snack!  It is the beginning of another refreshing learning year for all.

My favorite day of the year is every day.  I love the excitement of every student as they go about learning new things.  Watching that light bulb starting to go on and getting brighter as the day goes on is extremely exciting.  So my excitement grows as the year goes on.  I dread the last days of the year.  I hate good byes but know that I did my job as I watch my students go on to bigger and brighter light bulbs.

by Debbie E.

My favorite first day experience is watching all the students return to school with giant smiles that I will not see again until the next first day of school!

by Irene R.

The best first day experience I had was actually just this year. At the end of last year I had a class of graduating seniors that I had looped with for the past 3 years and I sent them off at graduation with notecards wishing them well, congratulating them, and encouraging them to keep in touch if they ever needed any help revising papers, etc. On the first day of school this year I received an email from one of those students thanking me for making him redo an essay I caught him plagairizing. He said it has helped him succeed in college and he appreciated the time and effort I took to work with hi. Those are the little notes and moments that dont happen very often, but that can last a lifetime to keep teachers happy that we do what we do!

by lynne r.

The first day of classes at the university is exciting, colorful, and always full of wonder--theirs and mine!  My new class, full of curiosity about me (often their first college teacher), and my wonderment at the faces I see before me; I wait for those first 'lightbulbs to go off' as their sodden summer brains begin to grasp new concepts as adults, now on their own.

My best first day was last March when I took over a 6th grade class for  an extended leave.  It helped me realize that I wanted to teach again, after staying home for the last 11 years to raise my kids.  I studied hard and passed the state exams with flying colors. I had switched from special ed. to regular ed, boy did it feel good to use my background in the room with the kids who weren't getting many services.  I am now teaching k-2 music because we have now music applicants. I love it!

by Susan L.

The first day of Pre-K is usually pretty dramatic for the little ones.  Most of them had never been in a school setting before in their lives, much less away from their parents.  Once we get through the first 20 minutes or so, we are good for the rest of the day.

This year has been my smoothest first day of school ever!  That is why it is my favorite.  By the end of the day, they were all laughing at me doing the hand jive!

by Trang V.

My best first day was this past March, I had been home for 11 years with my kids.  I took over a 6th grade class for an extended leave.  I loved it!  I realized I needed to teach again full time. My certificate lasped (no money, staying home, no district to pay for classes).  I was able to take the state exams and reinstate my certificate, switching from Special Ed to regular.  I loved working with "grey area regular kids who received no services.  When a 6th grader leaves you a note saying you made a difference, WOW!

I'm back!

I have been teaching for ten years and my favorite first day was actually this year! I have always wanted to try "looping" my class and teach the same students two years in a row. I was able to do that this year. Seeing my former students come back to me was still as exciting as a typical first day but without all the nerves! It was like seeing old friends and catching up without missing a beat!

This school year was the first year I had a regular schedule for the first day of school.  I felt this was my favorite first day because I was able to set the stage with all students right away and step right into my role as teacher.  My students were very excited that I started with a brainteaser quiz and talked about the first day for the first month of school!  I think this means that the day was positive for them as well.

by Breanne B.

I teach kindergarten and we do what is called gradual entry, where 1/4 of my class comes to school one out of four days.  This year, on one of the days, a child walked into my room.  He looked around the classroom, at the other 5 students sitting on the carpet, and at me.  Then he said, "Where are all my friends?!?"  Apparently, this smaller class size didn't measure up to his social appetite!

The first day of school is always is exciting for everyone!

by Julie C.

I recently changed schools and was a little apprehensive. I think this is a good experience for an adult to go through because we sometimes forget about what students are feeling. As it worked out, I am in a wonderful school and have wonderful classes. We all wrote a poem about ourselves on the first day of school and all started out great. I'm looking forward to the rest of the year. Susan L.

I teach college classes. Doing icebreakers and watching them laugh made the first day exciting for me.

by Alicia H.

My favorite first day of school experience was the first day of my teaching career, I was excited about my career choice and the opportunity to change lives forever! From the moment my first class entered my classroom I knew that I had the best job in the world and by far one of the most important jobs, I vowed that day that I may not change the world, but I would spark the mind of the one who would.. It doesn't get any betther than that...K. Whitley

by Kesha W.

The first day is great because you share the anxious "butterflies in your stomach" feeling with the kids.  We're all in the same boat hoping that the year will be a great one!

by Anna R.

My favorite first day of school was when I had just recently been awarded District Teacher of the Year and my school had a message congratulating me on the school's outdoor billboard.  It was very exciting and such an honor. I had always wanted to be a teacher and played school when I was just a toddler. Winning this award just made me realize how very lucky I was to have achieved such success in my lifelong dream.I still love my profession after 22 years of teaching and realize I have the  most important and rewarding job around. It has become more demanding, however, the children and their smiles are my daily reward. I thank God for blessing me with this special gift and chosing me to be the one to help children succeed. The sight of the yellow school bus and the excited children all dressed for their first day of school puts a smile on my face every year! I AM very lucky!

I work in University of Alabama at Birmingham. I teach somebody in the lab who might be much older, but I can always learn a lot from them also.

My favorite first day of school was when I saw a student light up with excitment about learning. by sharon J.

by sharon j.

On my first first day: 36 kindergarteners walked into a classroom I had set up only 24 hours before.  The instructional assistant didn't show up!  I didn't have enough name tags.  Not all of the children were enrolled, but their parents had left.  Several spoke languages I don't speak, and ONLY those language.  And, the list goes on...but I'm still at it 17 years later!  I *must* be crazy.

by Jody S.

The first day of my teaching career I was nervous and excited.  I was half giggling and crying the whole day before.  Within the first 30 seconds of letting the kids into the classroom, I had a student walk right up to me and exclaim, "I found something for you!"  Very happy to be getting a present so early in the year, I beamed as I said, "Oooo, what is it?"  Well, it turned out to be a baby lizard and I just about screamed, but it was great way to take away all my nerves and just make me laugh.  -Rachel H.

by Rachel H.

I love every first day. it's a brand new beginning for me and the little ones I teach. After 32 years of teaching kindergarten, I get get butterflies every first day. It's such an awesome responsibility to know that since most of my students have never been to school before, that's it's up to be to instill in them a love for school and for learning.

by Mary Jane C.

My favorite first day of school experience actually took place this year, the first day of my second year as a teacher.  Unlike the first time around, this time I actually knew where I was walking to and what I needed to do.  The first day can be hectic, and it felt so good having at least one first day under my belt.  The absolute best part however is familiar faces saying "Hi Miss", "How was your summer?"  It really puts a smile on my face and makes me thrilled to be back at a job I love.

by Erica T.

My favorite first day experience was my second year of teaching when I started my first whole year of teaching. I was excited and nervous and had 29 first graders looking back at me in the same way.

by Sherri R.

My favorite first day of school was my second year of teaching. The first year I was too nervous, but by the second year I knew what to expect and had a better vision of how the day would go!

by Sara J.

I teach kindergarten so the first day is always a memorable one for my kids as it is the first day of school for them as they begin their schooling career....they will only have ONE very FIRST day of school and it is with me.  I love how they come all innocent and quiet.  The first three days are usually like this and then they real kids come out after the first weekend.  We start our year with "The Kissing Hand" and this helps my students as well as parents get over those first day jitters.

by leemargaret j.

My favorite first day experience was my second year teaching and all of my old students came to say hello and tell me they missed me.

by sarah H.

I love every "first day".  I remember as a child going to get school supplies and how the new crayons and paper smelled.  As a teacher I am so excited the night before I can hardly sleep!

by SuzAnne H.

My favorite day of teaching was the day returning after Christmas break. We had a teacher work day before the students were to return the next day. I was teaching those wonderful hormone- gone crazy eighth graders. As I pulled up to that last stop light, wishing I had one more day, there crossing before me, with his backpack dragging and his face looking like he just sucked down a sour lemon, was my daily thorn in my side. I took such joy in rolling down my window and reminding him that he should go home to bed because he still had another day of vacation. The look on his face was justification for  those days of "I didn't do anything!"

My favorite first day memory actually happened this year.  I had a student we had to retain for this current school year.  She really had a horrible time on the first day of school.  I finally got her in the room, she looked around the room and announced to her new classmates, that she REALLY is SUPPOSE to be in 2nd grade. She was just put back in the room to be with me.  I still hear her mumbling about being in second grade from time to time.

by Jennie C.

My favorite memory is a student asked me if I knew how to teach?  Anne B.

by Anne B.

I was terrified my very first day! I was hired three days before school began. I was teaching seventh grade math and science in a class full of mostly Spanish speakers and I didn't speak more than a few words. I new with in a few minutes it was going to be a rough crowd. I knew just enough Spanish to know that there was plenty of cussing and dirty jokes being told at my expense. Well, I survived that first year. They say what doesn't kill you makes you strong and this was definitely true for me. Now, I wouldn't trade that experience for anything in the world. I really am not fazed by anything anymore. I love my job and it is the crazy challenges that make it so exciting.

by Patricia C.

My favorite first day would have to be this past January.  In December, I left my prestigious job at a university and follow my heart to teach at a community college.  The first day in the community college classroom was quite a challenge; the students were very different from my previous university students.  They had fewer skills, more personal problems, and a lot more energy!  After that first day, however, I got into the swing of things and really connected with my student population.  Now I wake up every day excited to be in front of the classroom!

by Elisabeth H.

The best first day experience I had was walking into the classroom that I had sat in 14 years earlier as a 6th grade student.  This time though, I was the teacher.  That's right, I had the opportunity to teach 6th grade in the same classroom that I had once been in.  It was one of the neatest experiences to relive the nostalgia of my educational experience.  I hope that I was as good a role model as was my sixth grade teacher (whom I am currently in grad school with)!

by Renee D.

My favorite first day was the first day that I taught Kindergarten.  It was the first time my school had offered the K class separate from the Preschool, so I started off with an empty room and spent a week painting, borrowing, buying, sewing, and planning to make it all perfect.  I knew when the kids walked in and looked around with big smiles on their faces that all the hard work was worth it.  I think of that first day every year just before school starts.

by Kerianne C.

I have been teaching for 25 years and still love it!!!  It is such a rewarding career.

by sheryl c.

Every day that I get to spend in my classroom is a favorite.  After 21 years as an educator I am still excited to get up in the morning and go to work.  I teach high school English and the rewards I receive from my students everyday give me the strength to continue.  I hope the feelings I have about teaching last forever.

by Katherine S.

My favorite first day of school was my very first year teaching.  I remember the students calling me "Miss B" since many looked at the spelling on the board and had absolutely no idea on how to pronounce it.  By my 3rd year, they learned it.........and I got married!

by Stephanie N.

The first day of school is the best. You get that same nervous stomach when you were in first grade. Every year is an exciting new adventure! Lucy68

by Anne P.

The excitement and anticipation of the first day is the same now (after 20+ years in the classroom) as it was on my very first day as a Kindergarten student (40+ years ago).  I still look forward to a new "first day" outfit and fresh school supplies!

by Gloria B.

My favorite first day of school was also my son's first day in Kindergarten.  He fell in love that day with........and chased her all around the playground!  What a blessing to me to be able to work at the same elementary school that my own children attended!.

My favorite first day of school was actually my second year as a teacher.  I was looking forward to a bright new batch of students, and seeing how my old students progressed!

My first day of school was my first as a teacher.  I loved that all my kids came into my class with a smile, and still carry that smile one month later.

by Amber P.

A favorite first day of school moment of mine was an experience I had with a student on my very first day of school teaching.  Being a brand new teacher, I wanted to make sure that the students were well-behaved, especially on the first day.  While students were working on a puzzle, a little boy was sneakily working on something under his desk.  I told him to stay on task.  By the end of the day, he presented an origami basket to me.  His sweet gesture put a big smile on my face!  I kept that on my desk the whole year!

My favorite first day of school moment was last year when as a career switcher I was a first year teacher at 37.  My husband sent me flowers, a balloon, and a teddy bear with a card that read how proud he was of me and that he knew I was going to do a great job.  Oh, he also told me how much he loved me too!  My students loved to read with the teddy bear and we ended up having to have a sign up sheet so that everyone would get a turn.

I loved the first day with seeing all of the smiling faces and helping them get adjusted to the big "Middle School".  Although it can be scary it definitely is a very fun day.

by Kristi C.

I was 22 and from Montana, but starting my teaching career in the South Bronx.  It was the first day and when I was getting ready for school that morning, I felt like I was putting my costume on a for a play.  I wanted so much to "feel the part."  I went to the cafeteria to pick up my students and stood there for a few minutes not knowing what to do.  It turned out a dad had been trying to get my attention.  "Ms. Casey... Ms. Casey....Are you Ms. Casey?" he repeated a number of times.  I felt embarrassed that I hadn't responded to being called, Ms. Casey.  I nervously laughed, felt relieved that he recognized me (I did look like a teacher!) and smiled as I met his son, my student!

I loved my new dress, the smwll in the air, riding the bus and most of all my first grade teacher, Miss Hutchinson! She made school fun, exciting and everyday a fresh day. I loved wearing my new shoes and how they were dirty after recess playing on the playground.

by Darcy B.

The first day of school is always nerve racking.  First trying to find your students, then figuring out if they are pick-ups or bus and which bus, then trying to learn their names!  I'm always nervous that someone will miss a bus or go on the wrong one.  Generally by the end of the first day I breathe a sigh of relief and know that the second day will be much smoother!

I love teaching and am thankful God has called me to enrich the minds and lives of children.

Every year, the first day is the most nerve-wracking.  Teaching high school kids English is not the easiest thing in the world, but there are rewards.  Once in a while, you really do get a kid who is excited about writing.

I just started teaching at a new school.  I miss my old school terribly and the students that I used to have.  I don't know how to move forward to make my new school just as great as my old one in my heart and same with the new students that I have.

by Molly S.

The first day of school is always exciting but nerve-wracking at the same time.  The students are always eager to start back and to see what is in store.  That makes the first day even better just by seeing their excited faces.

by Sarah T.

The first day and all the uniforms are freshly pressed. Never quite the same after that.

I love the first day of school.  I always read "The Crayon Box That Talked" and do some activities to go along with it.  It always ends up being a very fun day.

by Tiffany D.

In Summer 2007, I had reconstructive foot surgery so the first day of school was a transportational challenge.  My students (I teach middle school) were so great! They offered to help me carry books and were extra "good" because I was on crutches and in a cast.

by Liana C.

My favorite part of the day is when all the kids start coming in the classroom and they are all full of excitment, and are eager for what is going to unfold in front of them!

by Kathleen W.

My favorite first day of school experience is when all my students come to school with all their supplies, fresh clean uniforms, and an eagerness to get started on the school year. I spend the major part of the first day getting to know my students' names, likes and dislikes, and their personalities. Before homework, school is so different.

I was too nervous on the my very First Day as a teacher to enjoy it, but by my 2nd and 3rd year (this year), I really got to appreciate it! Last year and this year, my former students came and gave me hugs. It made me feel so good to know that somehow I'd done enough for them to remember me after a long summer off. It's also amusing when those students that give me hugs are the ones that I'd NEVER expect to do that! :)

This was my first fall as a full time TA. I was very nervous but enjoy the kids.

My favorite experiences seem to be the ones that took a bit of time before they were remembered well. The first week of school we were painting using only the warm colors (red, yellow, orange) You really know you have a handful when one of the students is not only distracting his whole table.. but is covered in blue.....

It would have to be meeting the children on the first morning back to school - everyone is excited and a bit nervous about a new teacher and a new school year. It is also a bit of a reunion for your students from the previous year. Everyone is dressed in their "first day of school" outfit - ready to start the school year off great. It is always a wonderful experience and I look forward to it each year.

I am a music teacher, so on the very first day of school we sing.  I have each of the students respond to a little singing "hello."  I love to hear the new voices that I get to work with.  They are all so sweet and small.  I love helping the students to find their singing voice and seeing the satisfaction they have from hearing it out loud (sometimes for the first time).  Since I see all of the students in the school, I love seeing my returning students and how they have changed over the summer and hearing their voices change along with the rest of them (though it is a much more subtle change).  I love the first day of school!

I absolutely love the excitement and thirst for learning that my kindergartenters have.  It is such a great age because they're like little sponges soaking up everything.  One thing that makes a first day interesting is when some of the kidergarteners either come on a random bus or are dropped off and we have no registration information for them.  We've actually had them come not knowing their name on top of this.

My best teaching memory was a tearful event. One of my hi-risk third grade students was accepted into a Gifted and Talented school. He was really very bright and just needed some encouragement and reinforcement. I was very proud of him.

I am a special ed. teacher.  I am most fulfilled when my learning disabled students learn to read or when they catch on to a math concept.  They are often 3 years behind in their learning and are often ridiculed for learning slower.  When they begin to improve their reading and math skills it builds their self-confidence.  Then they begin to make more progress.  As a teacher who is also a believer, I pray for my students, individually each day.  I ask God for wisdom  to be the best teacher for the students each day. I love my job, though it tires me out. I wouldn't change professions. Josephine G.

I started Kindergarten in a brand new school. I remember being so excited that we were the first kids to sit in the chairs, use the tables and play with the toys. When I think of the first day of school I always think of starting anew. Everything is fresh and clean. I can start new routines and improve on what I did the year before.

My favorite "first day of school" experience is seeing kids come with big eyes and anxious to see what to expect.  They are mostly happy, and mostly timid to watch you as a teacher share expectations.  First impressions are very important, so I love wearing a new Ann Taylor outfit to show them I am just as excited as they are :)

by Krystal A.

I love seeing all the bright and shiny faces ready to come in and learn!

My favorite "first day" was as a second year teacher. It was so different from my first year; I felt like I knew what I was doing!

I loved the first day of school.  I was able to put that behind me and look forward to more rewarding days.

by latangelia S.

My favorite first day of school was my first year of teaching.  It was wonderful to greet my smiling students and tell them that I welcomed them into "my" classroom.  Nothing has compared to that first day in my very own classroom.  I had finally fullfilled a lifelong dream!

My favorite part of teaching is the smile that kids give. I enjoy when kids really want to learn

I've been teaching 13 years and I still get nervous for the first day of school. Luckily everything has always gone well. It's tough to be back from summer.

by Sue B.

I teach college...anyone else?

by sandra m.

I am usually so nervous the first day.

My favorite first day experience when I was teaching Pre-Kindergarten and I had a little boy stand up and preceed to walk out. When I caught up to him and asked where he was going he said that he was going home because you had better toys at home.

by Mary M.

I have been teaching high school for eleven years, and I like the first day because the kids are mostly quiet and shy.  It's always interesting to see how they come out of their shells and form new friendships as the year continues.

by Laura B.

I love knowing my classroom is a peaceful and safe place for my students. I can watch them bloom!

by Jana C.

I love every first day of school.  My year is fresh and new.  I haven't made any mistakes -- yet!  There is excitement at the meeting of twenty new friends.

Thank You loft for understanding us teachers.

I love teaching the introductory college courses because the students come in eager to learn the basic material...it is inspiring to see those who enjoy the information and want to learn more.  Thank you loft for caring for us teachers, and helping us look great while doing what we love!! :)

I finally joined other teachers on your site Loft Loves Teachers.  I've received many compliments on your fashion.  Thanks much!  I teach preschool to Hispanic children so I speak Spanish and am immersing the children in English.  Very Rewarding!

My favorite first day of school was probably my 2nd year teaching.  I was nervous, just like the kids, but at least I had some clue as to what I was doing this year.  :)

I love the first day of school to wear a new outfit that I purchase at Ann Taylor Loft. I am so excited to wear my new clothes just like the kids! Thanks for helping me!

by Stephanie B.

I love the first day of school because you can see our students eager faces to learn !!!! You feel the butterflies in your stomach because you want to make a difference in their lives!!

by Marie L.

Like others I love picking out my back to school clothes from Ann Taylor Loft too!  My first day of the first day of teaching, I thought I was all ready for the students, but I wasn't ready for all the parents who wanted pictures of me with their student!  I'm glad I was dressed well! Now in my 4th year, I still get nervous each first day of school!

by Missy Z.

My favorite is taking pictures of my students on their first day.  As the year goes by, we look at those pictures and compare.  The students are always on their best on the first day.

by Victoria S.

I love when the students come in with all their new supplies and clothes eager to begin a new school year.  They are so fresh and ready to learn.

I really love teaching my first graders!

by Emily S.

by Emily S.

My favorite thing about the first day of school is how unpredictable it is.  Every year you have new and fun personalities.  You never forget the how excited and nervous they look on the first day.  One year we went outside and talked about the rules for the playground.  I told them that when they heard the whistle, they needed to line up on the wall.  When it was time to line up, one student looked very confused.  When I asked him what was wrong, he replied "I can't figure out how to get on the wall."  It is so funny how literal children are.  : )

by Crystal A.

This is great

by Lara S.

I have a favorite 2nd day of school! On the first day I reviewed with my middle school students the rules of the classroom...mutual respect and attentive listening.  On the second day I had students reflect on the rules from the previous day..."Mortal Respect" one of them offered.  I thought I would fall over laughing!

by Kerry B.

On the first day of school I always anticipate the kind of year I will have.  I encourage my students to think about where they will be educationally by the end of the year.  The things that they will learn and experienced in my classroom are always so unique.  I love exposing them to what the new grade requires and how I intend for them to reach  all of their learning goals.

I am a first year teacher and loved my "first day experience".  I have come teaching from the corporate world and NOW really feel like I am making a contribution!!

by Stacey W.

My favorite first day experience is always meeting my incoming students for the first time.  I enjoy spending a few minutes talking with each one of them at the door as they are entering our classroom for the first time.  It is then that I get the opportunity to make that first impression on them.  Some are truly taken aback when I want to shake their hand and ask them if they have a nickname that they'd like to be called.

Watching students learn and become part of a school community family is one of many of the great experiences of being a teacher.  Many times your students become just as close to you as your children.  Teaching truly does touch so many lives forever :)

Carol H.

by Carol H.

I don't have a first day experience, but the first day of school every year is exciting when my 8th grade students see all the new "ancient items and places" they will be studying this year.  History to them has always been memorizing "dates" which they find boring.  Just this past week, I had a young girl come up to my desk at the end of class to tell me how she has always hated history classes, but she has now changed her mind.  What a thrill that is to hear from a student.

I love the first week of school.  We play all sorts of "getting to know you" games and really just try to get to know each other in a relaxed environment.  I always read my students "First Day Jitters."  They love it, it shows them that everyone gets nervous, even the teacher.

by Erika A.

As a special education teacher I do not have a typical  "first day" with students. I am fortunate to be a co-teacher for reading in five general education classrooms. I work with first, second and third graders. The students excitement for literacy invigorates me. I am truly passionate about teaching.

by Carolyn M.

Actually I love the first week of school. Since I don't have a homeroom I am able to meet and greet the students as they enter the building. Therefore I want to make the students feel comfortable, safe and have a positive experience.  I feel that if I could make just one child really feel better and think of school as a great place to be than that makes feel A+!!

I teach theatre through the education department at a professional theatre company in Boston.  I've been working with teenagers, for about 22 years, and before this job at a MA high school, directing musicals, plays, and teaching drama classes.

My third day in my own class was a clear, sunny morning. The sun was filtering in the windows and the children were attentive. At an instant all was shattered when my paraprofessional Joanne told me that a plane had flown into the World Trade Center and was "stuck in the building". The day became a study in how middle schoolers react to terrorism in their homeland.

My first day of Kindergarten was scary because I started in January and my classroom was full. I had 29 students, over hald could not read on the level of the other Kindergarteners in the school because they had a sub since the 2nd week of school.  I quickly fell in love with them because they were willing to learn.  My fist year, or half semester, was really enjoyable because many of them did learn to read by the end of the year.

by Carol L.

I am in my fourth year of teaching Spanish in a middle school. I think I am more nervous than the students on the first day. This year, I planned and prepped endlessly for the first day. The day went so well, the students and I both excited for a great year. When the bell ran at the end of classes, I thought to myself, "I made it! Now, what am I going to do tomorrow?"

by Becca L.

I've been teaching for 20 years, and due to budget cuts, it's the first year that I didn't look forward to going back to school. It's always a challenge. I have 25 students and 10 on a plan. No assistant, and the special needs teacher comes to service the children, two hours out of eight( we do the extended day). But, I can't see myself do anything else but be a teacher. I love kids, faults and all.

My favorite first day back to school was a back to school night.  My husband and I moved to SC, and I was teaching at a new school, new grade, and just in a new environment.  My dad sent me flowers to put at my back table, and in the card he wrote that when the students come to meet me, that there was a carnation for each of them.  It made the kids feel special when I had them a carnation, and met them for the first time.  I now think of those flowers, my dad, and those kids every back to school night.

I love the first day of school, especially with my Spanish heritage language students.  They many times are very nervous about learning Spanish, usually their first but not dominant language.  It is very rewarding even on the first day of school to give them the confidence that they can learn Spanish and connect with their family members and their roots!

I recently just started teaching so I have only had one first day experience.  I teach high school so I have several different classes, so I guess my favorite first day was when one of my students asked me "Why I wanted to be a high school teacher when he was only like 5 years younger than I am?"  I responded by saying that "I wanted to make a difference and since I am not that much older I am the closet person they know to having just experienced what they are going through I pretty much can help them get through anything."  With that answer I made a connection with all my students and have an amazing way of keeping them under control because they can relate.

This year was my favorite first day.  I felt prepared.  I had my new fall wardrobe (courtesy of Anne Taylor Loft) I had my lesson plans for the month (LessonPlansMadeEasy.com)  and I had my lunches for the week (Lean Cuisine) and a re-usable water bottle.  I felt prepared, relaxed and ready for my new high school adventure!

By far, my best first day experience was also my very first year.  I was more nervous than any child in my room.  By the end of the day, I was sinking in a sea of doubt.  Little......hugged me and told me that she was glad that I was her teacher.  That was 30 years ago!!!!

by vicki w.

I always have loved the first day and after 17 years, I have had a lot of those.  One in particular that I remember was when our local t.v. station did a story on "the first day of a kindergartener" and that kindergarten student was in my class.  They went to her home early in the morning and followed her from the time her mom woke her up, as she prepared for school and then as she came into my classroom.  They wanted to experience first hand how exciting the experience is for some and also how scary it can be for others.  Wow!! They got a mixture of kids and their parents---kids happy, parents happy, kids crying and parents crying.  The t.v.station continued to air this story for the next three years after the first day of school in our county!  I was an overnight celebrity!!! by Sarah D.

This is a wonderful way to honor teachers.  Thank you Ann Taylor Loft for your discounts, financial support with Donors Choose, and providing a forum for teachers to share.  I do have one questions, where do we go on the forum to find this information:  "LOFT is also giving away $8,000 worth of DonorsChoose.org GivingCards! Vist the LOFT Forum to learn how to qualify."

Also, does anyone know how long it takes once we submit our Donors Choose project number until it shows up on Donors Choose if Ann Taylor Loft agrees to chose us for the "Double Your Impact."

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post, but I wasn't sure where else to post my questions.

Thanks so much!

My first day as a preservice teacher was great, and very memorable. A little darling said, "Hold up you hands." I complied and she marveled, as she held her palms pressed to mine, "You don't have little girl hands. You have teacher hands!" I thought that was so sweet, and I hoped it was true! Now, seven years later, I guess I do have "teacher hands"...

Pre-K is the most exciting grade for me. The kids are just full of love and willing to go along with me on my creative and wacky ideas. I love my job.

by Elizabeth S.

This school year has been very exciting.  I work with students in the 3 year old program thru 12th grade and I never have a dull moment!!  Since this was the first year I had a first day of school experience, I would say my favorite experience this year was seeing how the elementary students at one of my schools had matured and the new 5th graders took the lead.  I loved seeing the new faces as they came in and told us how they were going to get home at the end of the day and the warm hug that one of our new K students wanted as she stood crying as her mom drove away and how it made her week for her to stand and help me during morning duty!!

I loved the first day of my first year of teaching.  As the students came in and began on the assignment that was written on the board, I stood in the back in amazement.  I almost wanted to laugh because I couldn't believe the students were actually doing what I asked.  It was a surreal experience and one I'll always remember!  [Thanks to the LOFT, I was (and have been) decked out for the first day of school!]

After teaching 3rd grade for 25 years, you would think that the first day jitters would be a thing of the past.  They are still very prevalent every year which means I'm doing something right.  When I become complacent and bored with the first day, then it's time to retire!  Those first day jitters keep my ideas fresh and exciting year after year.

by Bittany H.

I love teaching first grade. It's all I know and love. I wouldn't trade it for the world. After 16 years of teaching I do remember my first day of school experience. It's memorable, but not on a good note. I walked to my classroom and thought I forgot my lesson plan book at home. All decked out in a dress, hose, heals etc., I ran to my car and tripped over the parking curb and fell big time! The two teachers in the lot both took in a deep breath and asked if I was OK. I just brushed the dirt and blood off of my knees and ripped hose, jumped in my car to rush home and then saw my lesson plan book on the floor of my car. I was sooo relieved that my planner was there, but saddened that not only did my hose rip my dress was torn as well. I had quite a story to tell my students that morning.

I have learned so much from my students, I think sometimes I learn more from them then they learn from me. Teaching is a lifelong learning process. Each year I add or find a new way to explain the material presented to the students. I believe I continue to grow each year and the students help me achieve my goals as a teacher. I love teaching and love to spend my days doing what I love to do!

I love teaching.  This year is really a bigger challenge than I thought.  I have a lot of struggling readers in my classroom.  Teaching third grade for the second time makes it difficult to get to all of the needs in my classroom.  My school need more remediation for those children that are struggling.  There is a lot of remediation for math but not reading.  My students are expected to pass the EOG and unless there is some more assistance, it will be hard to achieve that 3 or 4.  I have 22 students and no assistant.

My first day of my first year teaching was definitely a memorable one! I had a student who looked a little pale walk towards me.  "I fill sick Miss E," he said.  Then, all of the sudden, BLAH, he threw up right in front of me! Lucily, I had another teacher come in as soon as it happened and walked the sick child to the nurse while I tried to continue with the rest of the class. Now that I look back, I laugh! My first day experience is one I will NEVER forget :)

It is good to see the students on the first day of school.  Many of them have grown taller, gotten slimmer, or their voices have changed,  It is cool to see the new outfits that many of them have

spent many days comtemplating about wearing.  I work with a wonderful principal.  She tells us to get them here, get them fed, and get them back home safely.  This is our first day of school philosophy.

Thank you for the coupons.  Teachers are not paid well enough to afford the kind of clothes we really like to wear as professional but the discounts and coupons help us.  I wish we had a store close by me that carries size 16.  I love to wear your pants.  It is hard for me to find professional type pants these days.  Thanks again for the coupons and discounts.

Several years ago, I switched from teaching 6th to teaching 1st grade. I was very excited and knew that first-graders take things very literally. Well, I didn't know how literally. The 1st-graders were all sharpening pencils. They love the pencil sharpener, especially on the first day! I asked them all to sit down, and they did, right next to the pencil sharpener!!! :-)

I know I am about to meet over a 100 teenagers who I will affect in some way and I always hope that I will be the math teacher who not only teaches them some math but also teaches them about life. I always read "First Day Jitters" to my class. It leads to a good discussion about being nervous about starting a new school year. They are always surprised that teachers get nervous, too! My first day of school was very interesting because I began in January and was taking over a class of 29 Kindergarteners who were behind the other classes because their original teacher had quit in September and they were being taught by subs.  At least half of the parents came in to ask me if I would be the last teacher for the year and I assured them that I would be.  The sad part about this story is that the initial visit was the last time I had seen some of the parents, but it was great to meet them

by Queneesa A.

My favorite part about the first day of school is the first impressions.  I want to make an important first impression as their math teacher.  I know this sounds silly but it even comes down to picking out an extra special outfit that lets my junior high students know that I mean business! Ha! I also love the first impressions I get from my students! It is absolutely priceless!!

by Melissa T.

I remember my first day of Kindergarten was fun because my teacher was Ms. Love and she was extremely nice.  We made our hand print using paint.
