Topic of the Month: October 2009

In the age of Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, and other social networking websites, does it ever get particularly tricky for teachers to maintain a (student-free) presence online? Do you ever use social networking to get ideas for your classroom or unlock new ways to approach topics with your students? How have online educational resources impacted your teaching experience?

Comments

I don't use Face book because I want to maintain some privacy.  Even when you can decide who to accept, they still can see some of your information.  As a foreign language teacher I'm always trying to adapt whatever I'm teaching to the students everyday lives.  It's not always possible, but when I am able to do it, I see the connection.  I constatnly go on-line to look for interesting ways to teach.  Computers are an invaluable tool in my classroom and I'm not even that good (in fact I'm not good at all) with them.

by Cecilia B.

I feel like social networking sites are childish. I see all of my students talking about their pages and I also log on through a younger cousin to watch my teen age sons site. I think weave to remember our roles as adults and some of the content on those sites are not appropriate for adults.

I teach high school and I have a facebook page.  I make a point of not accepting my students as friends, and to explain its because I want to keep my private life seperate from my school life.  I never post anything on my FB page that I wouldn't want my students to see or hear, just in case they can see something in some way that I don't know.  I enjoy FB because it allows me to reconnect with people from my past and relive some of those memories from high school and college.  I have honest discussions with my students about what they should have on their social networking pages, because sometimes they don't realize who is looking at them.  While some parents are computer savy and pay attention, other's don't and someone has to teach them.

I teach 10th grade English for an online school.  I have a facebook account that I aquired for work, but I rdo not let my students know about it.  I keep it updated because I live 300 miles away from my family.  The nature of the environment of my school requires me to use the internet as a valuable resource.

by Patti K.

I have a student staff at Georgia Tech and am amazed at how the students will have the latest gadgets, but also know every way in the world to use them to their utmost capacity.  With this comes the teaching for them to make good decisions about the technology they use.  We encourage them to think about what they are doing, and how not to put "risky" material on their pages and accounts since potential employers are looking at these pages, so it is an early lesson in responsibility.

by Scott S.

I have a fb account. I refuse to tell my students that I have one. I am constantly asked by my students if I have a fb account. My answer to the question is always no. I feel that all teachers need to maintain a level of professionalism and keep their personal lives seperate from work.

by Jessica C.

I'm a high school counselor and I have a FB account, but I never accept students as friends (I just explain that I need to keep my social life seperate from work and they completely understand), and I have it set to private so only my friends can see my page. However, I would never lie to my students, so they know I have one if they ask. Also, several teachers have recently started using Twitter to remind students about upcoming projects, give extra credit, etc. As a counselor, I'm using it to remind seniors about scholarship applications and upcoming college info, etc. (i.e. a tweet might be, "Reminder -- National College Fair this weekend! See me for more info!" It works really well.

by Amy G.

I do not accept "friend requests" from my students.  Facebook for me is part if my personal life and there is a line that needs to be drawn between the classroom and outside the classroom.

by Teresa H.

I am a junior high school teacher and am very small in size (5', 100 lbs). I teach homemaking and at all times must maintain  my position as the teacher and not a friend. My students constantly talk about what they are doing on line. It is almost epidemic. I have been surprised that many parents aren't even aware what their students are doing on line at home.  I love my students but maintain a professional level between us. I have a fb account but do not let my students know that I have that side in my nature or it could get out of hand because my students keep coming to me with problems and for advice.  People keep asking me why I don't teach high school and they don't understand why I like to stay on the junior high level. I like that level because I understand the changes and  turmoil that 8th & 9th grade students are going through. Life at this age is not always easy and one never knows what is going on at home. I try to understand their problems while staying dressed professionally as an adult and teacher but an understanding one. I only hope that I can make a difference in my student's lives.  We have many opportunities on line for food and design shows and we do use them ocassionally. I personally prefer hands on classes and think my students learn more from it.  I have 30 students with a ratio of 10 males students to 20 female students for six, 50 minute class periods daily. My  greatest compliments are when my high school and junior high school son's tell me "Mom all of the kids like you, even the problem kids, that's why so many boys take homemaking and foods".  I have always known when students are kept busy they don't have time to goof off and disrupt class.  I thrill when a parent tells me that their son or daughter cooked dinner for their family or that their son was so proud of the apron he made in sewing.  If students are cooking dinner at home they are off the computer at least for an hour or so.

As a "green" substitute teacher, I see now more than ever the need for privacy in any teacher's life.  I cover grades from PreK to high school and while I'm constantly amazed by the children's reactions to me, I would never want them to be able to view my private life.

by Frances G.

I avoid online social networking sites entirely.  As a middle school teacher, the kids are clamoring to add their teachers as friends, but I feel very strongly that they don't need to know anything about my personal life.

by Kristin P.

I also avoid online social networking sites. However my junior high school encourages all teachers to use echalk for notes, assignments, etc. for our students and parents to visit.  As an ELA teacher, I'm constantly reminding students that in class they must use standard English, not the abbreviations they use for texting and emailing.

I have a Facebook account, but I don't accept students as friends.  It's strictly for me to stay connected to my family and friends.  It's a wonderful tool; it's like sending out and receiving postcards to people you like.  Like most of the other teachers, I don't post anything private.  I am considering creating a professional profile that I can use to stay connected to the clubs that I sponsor, though, since the students have created Facebook pages for them.  It would be a great way to get in touch with students (regarding an out-of-school activity or charity event, etc.) that I don't regularly see during the day.

I agree that it is important to keep a professional distance and not take part in student/teacher online chatter. I teach Latin at a private middle school and we have a school web address where I can email students and parents. Parents like instant gratification as much as their children. So this helps. However, when we were offered the opportunity to have our own blog on this site, I declined. The disadvantages outweigh the advantages, it seems to me.

 Enjoy reading your comments.

I agree that I am not comfortable being friends with students on social networking sites. Many schools use Blackboard Learning and it is possible to set up a safe blog for children to communicate with you and other students about school-related topics.

I recently became a facebook user, I love it since many of my friends and family are constantly on line.  It has become a way for me to communicate with them easier.

I am an English teacher and I joined facebook because my younger cousin, who is in high school, convinced me to so I could see his travel pix (he went to Japan!).  However, I hardly add a status comment and I often only use the private messaging to keep stuff more private.  I mostly receive messages on Facebook and don't as often send.  Facebook itself freaks me out because so many people can find you on it and it is rare that someone finds me that I want to hear from.  But I don't use it as an educational resource because, one, I never thought of it!  And two, I'm not sure how reliable it is...

by kristina s.

I'm a little old-fashioned, I like to use my e-mail system and control who/what is put on the internet.  I have my address groups, and that works for me.

Though I am not as active on my Facebook account when school is in session, some of my student are "My Friends" and think it is cool that I'm on a social network.  I haven't had students conduct school business with me through Facebook, which I would not allow.  It helps me know them a little better as people (ie., interests, what's important in their lives), though I can't think of an idea or issue presented on Facebook that I've used specifically in my classroom.

Thanks for offering us store promotions and recognition just because we're teachers.  I love your clothing, and your incentives make me more than ever a fan of Ann Taylor Loft!

Concerning facebook....our principal recently got a FB page and now many of the teachers have been accepted as friends on his page...there are many teachers that think this is very non-professional on his part..I am one of them...I have lost a bit of respect for him because of this...to me...when you are an administrator you should not be facebooking with your employees...am I old fashioned?...what do you think?

"Separate" has been misspelled several times on this forum. I teach my kids you should be able to spell "a rat" in separate. Of course, I also tell my middle school students when they misspell something it's an error; when I misspell something it's a typo!

Thanks Loft for supporting teachers!

by Regina P.

I use my maiden name online on Facebook...so I am  "hiding" out. LOL

by Sandi D.

thank you Loft for offering a break to us teachers! I think that having online tools can be a positive resource in the classroom such as teaching websites. i have a wiki that i use to allow students to make recordings and post messages about specific topics. Twitter can be used for educational purposes as well. Technology can be great if you know how to make it work for you!

by Georgina M.

I am a college professor and have friends, family, alumni and major students as my 'friends'.  I don't post anything that I wouldn't want my students to see.  I find it interesting to read my students' posts and learn more about them and what's going on in their lives; I have not come across anything offensive or uncomfortable.

by Laura C.

I've had several FB friend requests from my middle school students.  I politely tell them that I'll be glad to be virtual friends once they've graduated from high school.  I have several friends who are former students; I love knowing what they're up to in their adult lives. Social networking provides another writing venue for students, so we talk about the need for being savvy online.

by Martha G.

Thanks for helping teachers!!

by Jennifer A.

I have a Facebook thing...signed up for it...no idea how to use it.  Not comfortable with people being able to easily find me.  I mainly did it because I had heard some very young teachers in my bld were posting very questionable things and, being curious, I wanted to see how it works.  Guess I will wait till my college daughters are home on their respective fall breaks to teach me.

by Pamela B.

I have a facebook account and use it to stay in touch with family and friends that are across the country. I keep my account private and would not accept students as friends.

We use online tools for almost everything we do (I teach a foreign language). However, I only use spaces offered by our school: school email, school website, MOODLE. I keep Facebook as a private space, and I only accept students' invitations after they graduate. It is for there own good, too: they often post pictures and text that I could not ignore if I was still their classroom teacher. I still believe that we need to respect each others buy giving ourselves some ....space.

I teach first year composition at a university, and we not only utilized web modalities in composition, we encourage the incorporation.  Literacy studies, in general, show that most students prefer the online practices- therefore it only makes sense to incorporate them into their assignments.  For example, the last 'essay' I had them turn in could have been a standard academic 5 pager, it could have been an audio essay turned in on a jump drive as a sound file, or they could have created and published a video essay to you tube and turned in the link.  Any of these would have worked, all of them had representation, and each are practically useful to their educational process.  In the end, I teach composition as more than writing.  It's a planning and execution process giving voice to myriad ideas presented in approachable venue.

But no, I don't let just anyone add me to their Facebook accounts.  It's private, and only my friends need be on it.  Not my peers, not my students, not general acquaintances who just wanna see my pictures once and move along.  This isn't complicated, it's just me using my social site how I want to use it.

There is a blog for everything.  Students have access to my wiki spaces course outline and blog roll and whatnot.  That's plenty of 2.0 interaction.  And sometimes a lesson in "no" has value, too.  I am, in the end, a teacher.  I am not a huge group of young people's mother.  I can mentor, and I can guide, and I can listen and offer up support, but I can't be expected to give them all that I am.  I don't expect that from them, either.  Sound callous?  Maybe so.  But my life has value, too.

Now I'll take my soapbox and go home.  Thanks for the place to vent, how unexpected was this!?

by tonia t.

I am a school counselor and I do have a social networking account. I do not accept friend requests from students and explain the professional distance of a student/ teacher relationship.

by Kim r.

I agree, I've actually stayed away from adding colleagues aswell

by Kinyta S.

I have two teenage step children that live in another state and they move alot (because of thier mom), and my husband is in the military...so with having family in Ohio (my mom's and my stepchildren), in Mississippi (my dad's) and then in Puerto Rico (my husband's),  MySpace has become nessesary in order to keep in regular contact with family.  Not everybody has the same address or phone number all the time, so letters can go returned and phone numbers get that wonderful "we're sorry but your call cannot be completed at this time", but with MySpace I am able to keep in touch with family members and never have to worry if I will lose touch.  Of course, I am sensative about what I put on my page, it is all things that if somebody else saw it then it would be OK and acceptable.

by Tina V.

I am not a member of facebook.  I do teach physical education at the elementary level and recently discovered on P.E. central that they have a wed site that encourages students to become more physically active.  I believe this is a great way to get children to participate in more activities outside of school.  I plan on having my students participate on this wed site with a reward of extra P.E. time once a month.  Remember keep those kids moving.

Thank you for this program.  I do not have a fb account,as I  value privacy in a world where privacy is disappearing.

by darlene p.

i prefer not to be a part of the facebook community

by Jane L.

I HAD a FB account - I left it for other reasons than to maintain privacy, but since I teach elementary school, it was the PARENTS of my kids that I really had to deal with on FB.  While it is a convenient way to augment regular communications about how their kids are doing, it's not really a good way to skip out on a real parent conference simply because all of the info also skips out of confidenetiality.

I teach high school and I do have a Facebook account, however I don't accept current students as friends.  I have had seniors who have graduated ask to be my friend, and I accept them, but put them on a "Limited List" where they can only see certain things.  No pictures or wall posts.

by Kristin B.

Personally, i do not see anything wrong with having a personal site. We are people, moms, dads, cousins, sisters, and then teachers. It is important to keep all those sites private and to not discuss this with our students. We should not be adding them as friends- they are not our friends. We are educating them, not being their myspace or facebook friends.

I enjoy facebook!  I have lots of parents of students both past and present who stay in contact.  I do not allow current students to become my facebook friend.  One thing I have tried this year is to form a facebook group for current parents/students.  It allows me to send messages to them and for them to respond.  It has not been as effective as the blog I used last year because some parents still have reservations about using it or allowing their child to use the social network.  I teach 5th grade.

I do not have a fb page, but several of my co-workers do and try to encourage us last few hold outs to join.  I try to put as little information online as possible.  As an 8th gr. LA teacher I constantly see the adverse affects of technology in regards to basic reading and writing skills.  Every year students seem to be lower and lower and less motivated by traditional reading (as in a book) and writing (on actual paper).  Since our school has very few computers it is not possible to teach writing skills on a computer.

I love the Loft, but today I was refused teacher discount ( I have already signed up) from an employee because I teach in a vocational/trade school ~ she said "it is only for teachers in public schools".   ? After some questioning she gave me the discount, but still acted like she was doing me a huge favor. Are we not teachers as well? Many times we mentor and mold the students that struggled in our High Schools. We provide the education for many service professionals in a workforce that drives our economy.

I am a 7th grade Math teacher. I have a facebook account as well. However, I don't accept any of my students as friend. I would like to maintain some privacy. This year I am using two different website.

1) New.schoolnotes.com

I use it to keep my students posted. I upload the homework assignment online and download any documents from the website as well. It is a good communication between me, students, and parents. They can always send me a message whenever they have questions. I think it is much easy for parents to keep track of their child's school work.

2) Engrade.com

Students can go online and keep track of their grades. I think it is a great website where students can see what homework assignments they are missing. Their class participation, project grade, tests and quizzes grades can be all posted online. I think students are more motivated when they can see the relationship between their grades and their work. Sometime students think teachers give them a grade. They need to understand that their grade reflects their performance in school.

by Oi Shan C.

I, too, like many posting here, teach high schoolers.  I do not allow students as "friends" so that my reputation can be above reproach!  When a student asks me, "I asked you to be my friend on Facebook and you rejected me," I say, "Hey, if you have a party for your birthday, are you going to invite me?"  The student always says, "no!"  I then say, "Well, that's because we aren't friends!  Nothing personal -- just like you not inviting me to your party.  When you graduate, I'll be happy to let you on my Facebook because then our relationship will have changed."  That usually does the trick.

by Deirdre D.

Hi everyone,

by Kathy T.

I love the Loft!

by patty r.

Greetings everyone. My concern about social networking sites is: Who owns the information that gets posted? Do the comments and the pictures posted to your page remain yours? Or is the site allowed to use your comments and pictures without your knowledge? I don't have any social accounts. I think it's too risky.

As for the LOFT discount, thank you. I appreciate that you want to help teachers dress professionally. I can't wait to start shopping.

Can't wait to start shopping at LOFT!

Thanks for all the support for teachers. I'm going to let all the teachers at my school know about this opportunity!

by Lisa E.

I do believe that technology is effecting teachers and students in a major way. The students are able to learn in a different and sometimes more effective way; however privacy is also taken from us as teachers with all of these different networking sites. It is important for professionals to be careful of what they disclose online or anywhere for that matter. Someone is always looking. As far as helping to teach...of course thats a given. All teacher conjure up lessons and worksheets from online sources.

I do not use any social networking site.  I have also asked my friends and acquaintances not to mention me or post pictures of me on any of their social networking sites.  In an age when teachers can be sued or have their jobs threatened for just about anything, private or public, I don't want to risk having a student find something that they think is funny or shocking or odd and then showing/telling his or her parent who could decide that I am not qualified to do my job because of that something.  And yes, if you're wondering if I'm paranoid, I am--I even worry about the information that I post on the google website I've created for school.  Sometimes I fear that the one picture of me with the club that I sponsor on our first field trip a couple years ago (just a normal group picture--a group of people standing close together)  could get me in serious trouble.

I do not use social networking sites to communicate with students.  Teacher websites are sufficient.  I also try to communicate as much as I can through email to maintain professionalism with my students so they know I care and want to communicate with them, just not through social networking.

Thank you very much for giving teachers this privilege.  Now that I'm in the process of losing all the post pregnancy weight and getting on the track by dressing more professionally, I will definitely need the discounts.  Thanks Ann Taylor Loft for recognizing ALL the work we do that sometimes goes unnoticed and unappreciated.  THANKS!!! I will tell my coworkers when I return to work next week...

To protect my privacy, I use aliases.  I volunteer helping victims of internet fraud.  When one uses their real names on the internet, post pictures of themselves and family and personal information, it is up for grabs for the scammers.  There are a lot of wonderful people and resources on the net, just have to play it safe.  Good luck and thanks Ann Taylor for having lofty and lovely clothes.

I do not have a facebook account.  I know several friends who have had problems with their spouses because ex-sweethearts are now contacting them through the site.  It's best to leave the past in the past.

I agree that Facebook does not belong in a classroom and having students as 'friends' is dicey.

Social networking is for my private and social life, not for anything work related. After I gained a large group of friends on facebook, I set myself to private. I'm unsearchable if you type in my name, which stopped students and parents from wanting to be my friend.. makes it worry free about being unprofessional and allows me to have a life outside of work.

by Melanie A.

I do not use facebook period!  I also like to maintain privacy from students.

by Kristi C.

Love your clothes!!! Thanks for doing this for teachers.  It's very much appreciated. Anything suit I put together makes me look very professional- I just love it!  Can't say it enough.

by Joyce W.

I do have a facebook account, however, it is set to private and only friends and family can look me up.  I do not accept any friend requests from students, whatsoever.  I also try to be careful on what pictures I post to my account.

I do use the internet in the classroom to motivate students to learn.  Last year we did a math symmetry unit project.  I allowed my students to search the internet for pictures of symmetrical tattoos.  They read a blog about it that was on tattoo Johnny's website.  They then created their own.

by Milan S.

I have a facebook account. It has allowed me to connect with old high school friends. When my students request me as friends, I just ignore them. I press "ignore." I don't want them to be a part of my circle. Besides, I have old friends putting up old pictures that are hilarious. I am not ready to share those pictures. They cannot see what is posted on my wall or profile. When posting, you must make sure that you put "for  friends only."

I love LOFT!

by Donna C.

As long as the server is working, everything is at my fingertips.  I can get information on almost anything. It is easier for my students to do research for art and music. Therefore, they do not have a legit excuse as to why they couldn't do the assignments or research projects. Unfortunately, because of the internet, there are students do not know how to use books and periodicals for research.

Our district has a blog set up just for teachers, parents, and students to use.  We also have our work email available for communication and a call-out system.  I don't think it is appropriate to invite students or parents to join your personal websites until after the students have graduated high school. There are plenty of was to reach this technological savvy generation without violating a teacher's privacy.

Thank you so much for the discounts. Teachers need this!

by Lisa W.

Ditto for Pam W.  I agree!

by Catherine T.

Yes, I have a FB page. It is set to private so that only my approved friends can view it, and I NEVER approve friend requests from my students or parents. I have a right to keep my "real" life separate from my work life, and no student or parent has ever expressed a negative opinion about that. I think it is wrong to deny that you are a real person with a real life outside the school setting.

by Allison H.

Yes, I have a FB page. I am "friends" with many of my senior high school students and with alumni from the past 15 years. I follow the policy of never asking to be friends with a student. However, if they ask me, I will accept. It has been a great tool for mentoring, building positive relationships and keeping in touch. It enables my students are able to see that I live and act the same way, both in and out of the classroom. Regarding classroom use, I have posted links to articles that relate to my subject. Sometimes students send me links to something that relates to what we are studying in class.

by Laurie L.

I do have a Facebook page that is completely private and only available to those limited few that I choose to "allow" as friends.  None of my students have ever been able to find me because there are privacy settings which let you block the ability for people to search for you.  I believe teachers should be able to have lives outside of their classrooms.  Many of my friends are teachers, on and off of Facebook.  Teachers from different schools, districts and areas of the country can vent, compare notes, or just sympathize.

by Lauren H.

I just love stylish clothes. Thanks for the great deals!!!

by Johanna W.

Facebook was not invented for kids. It was made for college students and adults. Children should not be on this site! I should not have to decline a site like this, I am private, and will make the adult decision not to befriend students or children.

by Alexandrea P.

Thanks Ann Taylor for stylish clothes that are affordable and fit right.

by Laura Ude U.

I made a rule that I would not become friends with anybody under highschool age, - I teach Elementary age students. But run into the problem that my youngest brother's friends all want to add me. Now I think 3 or 4 times before I post anything. I should have been stronger and said no. However, it is good for them to have good people to look up to and see how they live and communicate with others, and it does also help me think about the things I say and do a bit more knowing they will see and follow.

The internet is not private. Once something goes up there anybody with enough brains can trace it. I remind myself of that when I get frustrated with facebook and social sites that are similiar.

by Laura Ude U.

I love facebook

by lynnette m.

I use FB, and have accepted some of my students. I made sure my privacy settings were all set up correctly before even considering this. Most of these students are my lacrosse players or seniors getting ready to graduate. They cannot even see who I am friends with, picture I post, pictures other people post, etc. The only issue I have ever had is when another teacher friend of mine added one of her tennis players (after the player graduated) and posted a picture of me drinking without hiding it from that student. I have thought about using Twitter to inform students about assignments and such. I no longer have a myspace. I deleted it when too many students found my page. The security settings on myspace are not very good in comparison to facebook.

by Janine B.

Facebook is OK but NOT my space. Not very good security.

I appreciate that you recognize our profession.  I enjoy shopping at the LOFT.  Thanks!

by Kathleen N.

I am the Director of Army Programs for Hawaii Pacific University.  I also teach Political Science classes online for Hawaii Pacific University.  Interaction with my students is largely online.  I have a Facebook account that I maintain because my family is 700 miles away but I am not very committed to the network.  Some students have 'friended' me through this account but I have declined the request.  I have incredible connectivity and constant interaction with my students.  Connecting with my students outside of professional networks is terribly invasive for them and me.  I am a firm believer that a division must exist in our professional, educational, social, and family lives in which we decide the point of overlap.  Privacy is a dwindling commodity.

Teachers should always consider ways to improve their practice and share their great ideas. In many ways the internet has proven to be a useful resource for enhancing my instruction.  I find the internet and social networking to be necessary tools for keeping up in the 20th century.  As long as we use safe practices the possibilities are endless.

by ROSE MARIE P.

I'm a high school teacher, and my students always get excited when they see I have a facebook account--they think it's crazy that their teachers actually have lives... As a rule, though, I do not friend students on facebook.  Just as most of the other teachers here answered, I explain that it's not appropriate, just like it wouldn't be appropriate for me to hang out at the mall with them!   However, I do take advantage of the fact that they ALL have facebook accounts to further their learning in my subject field.  I have assigned students to start groups on facebook having to do with my subject, and also to create facebook pages (on paper, not really) for important personages in my subject matter.  Also, I have them develop discussions in relevent groups.  I've found it to be a great tool in general!!

I use Facebook to stay in touch with college friends. I have all of my information locked so only friends can see it.  I have never had a problem with students because they cannot find me.

However, to talk to my student online I have set up a Google docs account. The students and I can share documents that are related to school like their book report summaries.  It saves paper and time because I can comment on their work right there. It's also a great way to stay in touch with past classes. A number of my former students keep in touch with the whole class by sharing documents with everyone.

It is important to keep a professional distance when using social networking sites.  However, being effective in the classroom means using tools of the 21st century to educate and prepare our students for their future.  Social networking is the current trend not only for teenagers, but for all age groups and walks of life.  As educators, we need to teach our students how to be responsible users of these sites and all technology so they will learn how to use them safely and responsibly.

I am an elementary teacher who teaches all students in our school. I have two facebook pages, one for people who have graduated high school on up, and one on which I will accept friend requests from former students (grades 5-12). This has allowed me to keep my privacy, but also to keep up with some of the students I had for several years. It has been a great balance for me. On the fb page for former students, I purposely do not discuss political topics, and just comment here and there (e.g. congratulations on your successful track meet!, you are so funny!, etc.). It helps students know there is an adult out there who cares and has their best interests at heart. I think our kids need these additional supports, especially in today's world. On my fb page for former students, my quote is something like "Let us remember what we write, what we say is like a toothpaste - once it comes out, it can never go back in that tube! Let us all be people who build each other up!" This page has been successful and I find the students kind to and supportive of others!

by Kathleen P.

I like having the line of teacher and student - I don't communicate with students on facebook, etc.

As an Early Childhood Teacher, I don't have to worry about students thrying to "friend" me on Facebook, but I do find it awkward when a parent tries to "Be my friend".  My biggest complaint about Facebook is how "public" your life suddenly becomes.

But, the internet has provided a wealth of info and resourses for me as a teacher!!  I go to it weekly for new ideas.  I wish I could wear Loft clothes to work more often...too afraid of getting paint or sticky fingers on me!  But I do LOVE wearing Loft clothes when I leave my day job!

It is dangerous for any teacher to let their personal life out into the open. FB is a dangerous place to leave personal pictures or comments...and that goes for anyone in any position where they are seen as a role model. I have a friend who is also a teacher and if you seen her behavior on FB you wouldn't want her teaching your kids. However her behavior in the school is not anything close to that of FB.

by Promise J.

Since when are teachers not allowed to have a life? Why don't people remember that we are professionals but we are people too! I don't owe my students any sacrifice in my personal life away from them and I can have a FB page and drink alcohol with my friends and husband. My husband is an attorney and they don't let their fight for justice stop them from letting loose outside the office. Why should teachers be restricted to what others think they should act like??

I enjoy some of the social networking sites,  yes it is difficult to maintain privacy.  When I post comments or pictures I just make sure that they are not revealing to much about me.

I teach at the college level, and do not accept student Facebook friend requests.  Additionally, I restrict what can be seen by non-friends, and make sure my public picture is appropriate, in case my students search for me on FB.

I use the internet to keep my kids' attention during our 3-hour class.  Youtube videos are especially helpful in demonstrating scientific concepts in entertaining, applicable, and often humorous ways.  My school also utilizes software which allows me to post notes, syllabi, quizzes, calendar, etc, in an online and paper-saving format.

As a new teaching assistant at Wright State University, I teach one section of English 101 (Academic Writing and Reading) for 25 students; I've found so far that embracing students' obsession for electronic media is actually more helpful than harmful--as long as it's used to get them to learn. After successfully incorporating online articles and advertisements as the focus for essays, I think I will definitely continue to use electronic media as much as I can in my college English classroom.

Happy shopping at LOFT :)

by Ineza K.

I do have a FB account and it is used only for private use. I see a great benefit to the proper use of social networking sites for adults, especially when our family, friends, and former colleagues are all around the world.

There does need to be a line drawn between students and teachers and I would never let students on my private facebook profile. This year, my colleague and I set up a "teacher" profile on FB that our current class can add us as friends. There I post updates on our class, interesting news, tips and reminders before tests.  I also make myself available before test day at a scheduled time so the students can ask questions the night before. It has been a big hit with parents and students as they feel they can access me when they really need the help.  I like that all my students logged on for the study question time and I think an improvement in scores from the year last. (Only time will tell for sure). None of the students have realized that I don't post any personal information on there and probably don't think that I have a second facebook account. Mrs. T. LastName, is the only one they need to know about. If they should find my Name MaidenName LastName account, they will be denied.

Thanks AnnTaylorLoft for such a great forum!

by Theresa H.

I use facebook, but I do not accept students as friends and I keep my information private.  Regardless, I NEVER post anything that I wouldn't want anyone to see in public.

by Heather N.

I use facebook, but I also do not accept students that are friends.  I also do not add any information or pictures that I would not want students or administrators to see

by Ashley B.

I use facebook, but I do not allow myself to be searched by all. I also make sure that anything that goes on my page or is linked to my page is something that is in no way inappropriate for others to see (students, collegues, etc) I also will untag anything that a friend puts up I wouldn't want someone to see.

I wish Ann Taylor Loft had more business styles to select from. Although I have enjoyed the new clothing "relaxed" styles, I need more clothing for the classroom.

Love the clothes!! Thank you so much for such great styles!

I don't use facebook, twitter, or myspace.  I know that there are a number of teacher resources that incorporate technology as well as serve as a communication vehicle that allow me to balance my professional and personal roles.  As a mother of a teen, I understand the fascination and even respect it, simply prefer not to use it.

I really appreciate the discounts for teachers. However, I'd like to see more business styles at The Loft. I wear a lot of you clothes outside of school, but many of your styles are too low-cut and casual for the classroom.

Thanks.

I have a facebook account and use it to keep in touch with my family, friends and my teenage children. My teenagers attend the school I teach at, and they have "friended" me, which I think is a good thing. I can see who they are talking to and what they are posting. I have several students who have requested me to "friend" them and I refused and told them why. I cannot be their teacher and their friend. Just as I do not try to parent my own teenagers and be their friends.  There are teachers at my school who do accept students as "friends" but I do not feel like I need to be "cool" to be a good teacher. My students know I care, but they also know I am the teacher.

by Susan S.

Thank you Ann Taylor.  Love your clothes.

by Dieulinh L.

I've been shopping at your store for years.  I discovered it in my quest to find professional clothes for my 4'10" stature.  Thank you for catching on that your styles are perfect for the teacher lifestyle.  Regarding the social networking- I just don't do it.  If I did, I would do everything in my power to make sure students could not access it, even though I would keep in mind that whatever I put on there is public.  Technology has its place, but there needs to be a line drawn in order to maintain privacy and I need to be the one to draw with regards to my own life.  Also, nothing takes the place of personal contact.  If I want to know more about a student, I can ask them and they can respond how they feel comfortable.  However, this is just a reminder that teachers are models and the best way students learn is by example.  So, of course we should always be concious of the image we present.

by Nicole S.

I love ATL!

by Amanda M.

I am a teacher, not a friend:)  I care about each and every one of my students, but do not encourage a relationship outside of my classroom!
